Continuing the discussion about Adwords sales started here next you want to keep in mind…

Keywords Count

Yes it should be obvious that keywords count. But still try to select relevant
keywords. The best match to market you can. Because typically the more relevant your keyword the higher the CTR.

Generally you want to go specific before going broad. That usually means going with two or three word phrases. CTR are higher for those anyway. If they work, and only if they work should you try introducing broader, less targeted terms.

Keeper Ads

The next suggestion may also be a bit obvious yet still it’s often overlooked too. Run the best ad you can.

Simply put I count on writing a better ad than my pesky competitors. Besides doing so wins you points not to mention position with Adwords. Since a more attractive ad will give you a better CTR. Which in turn can jump you ahead of even those bidding more than you. What's not to like about that?
TIP: Where ever possible include the targeted keyword (phrase) in the headline or text. Not easily done every time to be sure. But when you can it will show up bolded and catch the surfers eye. Believe it or not that bit of bolding alone Google does for you can jump CTR.

Key on First Page Visibility

Ideally you want to bid enough to show up in the top 8 listings without investing an arm and a leg to get there. Because that puts you on the first page of Google listings. Such visibility puts you in prime position for clicks.

What I do is play around with the bid estimator feature. I usually see where a 15 cent bid will get me first. Then adjust DOWN from there.

For sure I ignore the suggested bid Google comes up with to be #1. Since that’s usually a sum only oil sheiks can afford.

But I find I can often cut the amount I bid disproportionately to the number of clicks it will cost me. Granted that is subject to change as new advertisers show up to try their luck. But remember I count on my ad being better than average. That advantage will let me hold my own against all but the most moneyed Adwords players.

So those are a few tips for improving your adwords click through rate. Hopefully enough so you can stay in the game long enough to ultimately excel. And enjoy 4:1 or 5:1 returns or better. Then the problem becomes a distinct lack of additional keywords to bid on. Oh but of course there’s always Overture. But that’s a topic for another time.
